Galleria dell'Accademia - 09.03.06
Next stop is the Galleria dell'Accademia, home of Michelangelo's David, and some of his unfinished sculptures (the Prisoners), which I like a lot. The guidebooks talk a lot about how, metaphorically, these human figures are trapped in the marble and blah, blah, blah, but I just like seeing something that's halfway between "large rectangle of marble" and "finished sculpture of a human form," to get an understanding of how you approach a task like that. I cannot fathom how one "does" sculpture. It's a total mystery to me.
Oh yeah: there are some paintings here too. Eh. I'm happy with the Michelangelos.
